“What are Pharmacists doing in their pharmacies when unable to supply Metformin XR. The local doctors seem to want us to give standard release in the short term. What is your protocol?”

Our local doctors also wanted us to give standard release in the meantime. Oftentimes the dosage was not even altered which makes me wonder what the advantage of SR is? We advised all patients to be sure to monitor BGLs extra carefully during this time. But seems like we are getting the SRs back now anyway, in fits and starts.

GI tolerability. Change your patients to immediate release and big doses and you will literally give your patients the s##ts. Need to split up the dose as much as possible and ensure taken with food. XR and IR are roughly equivalent mg for mg despite different maximum dosage.
