Survey reveals there is strong buyer demand and growing availability of pharmacies on the pharmacy market

The results of a new market sentiment survey indicate there is “very strong buyer demand” for pharmacies, and the likelihood that the number of pharmacies available for sale is set to increase.

The fourth iteration of the Attain Pharmacy Market Sentiment Survey reveals a “quite strong” market, according to Natalie Sirianni, director of Attain.

“The results from the July/August 2021 Pharmacy Market Sentiment Survey show that the pharmacy business sales market continues to be quite strong and indicates that this will likely continue,” Ms Sirianni said.

“The results show very strong buyer demand and that supply of pharmacies on the market is likely to increase within the next 6 months. We are starting to see signals of this happening in the marketplace with a number of pharmacies recently being listed for sale.”

Some of the key findings from the survey include:

  • Over 70% of the sample (both pharmacists and current pharmacy owners) are looking to buy
    a or another pharmacy, 20.5% of the sample within the next 6 months;
  • Approximately 38% of pharmacy owners in the sample will be looking to sell their pharmacy
    (or one of) within the next 5 years; 7.7% plan to bring in a junior partner instead of selling;
  • 64.1% of the sample believe that pharmacy business prices will increase over the next 12
    months, approximately 31% believe they will stay flat. Of those who said prices would increase, 56% said they would increase slightly and 7% thought they would increase significantly.

“Overall, these results show positive market sentiment for the Pharmacy Business Sales market from both buyers and sellers,” MS Sirianni said.

“We hope that pharmacists throughout Australia will be able to use this data to assist with their decision making when it comes to buying or selling a pharmacy!”.
