In this randomised triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial on 112 patients with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin-D3 <30 ng/mL, supplementation with weekly oral calcifediol (25- hydroxyvitamin D3) compared with placebo improved asthma control over 6 months. The intervention group received oral supplementation with 16 000 IU of calcifediol per week. To achieve clinically significant improvement in the Asthma Control Test, the NNT with vitamin D supplements was 3.73 patients.
