New research has found that a low calorie liquid formula diet may help treat and prevent the onset of Type-2 diabetes.
Losing weight and following a restricted diet is already known to improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes. The practical difficulty is to achieve enough weight loss and maintain that weight loss.
The University of Surrey’s Professor Anthony Leeds believes that in two years’ time losing weight with formula low-energy diets will be the standard approach for newly diagnosed people with type 2 diabetes.
“We already know that formula diet programs providing just 800 to 1000kcal/d can give enough weight loss to gain the improved control of diabetes, we know that people can maintain a 10kg (20 pound) weight loss for four years and we know that health benefits (lower blood pressure, reduced pain in arthritis, improved sleep quality in obstructive sleep apnoea) can be maintained, so this is not just a short term effect,” he says.
A study on reversing pre-diabetes and preventing the progress towards diabetes is now underway in eight countries including Australia.
After weight loss with the formula diet different dietary combinations of low GI, high protein and exercise levels will reveal the best way to prevent diabetes developing.
“This is work in progress,” says Prof Leeds, “but the commitment of the charity DiabetesUK and the European Commission to high-level funding tells us that experts in several countries believe this could help solve the global crisis in rising rates for obesity, diabetes and other weight related problems.”
It is hoped the research will encourage more prediabetes patients to prevent the onset of diabetes through dietary changes.
The study follows similar research conducted by Professor Leeds on the impact of the low calorie diet to control conditions such as osteoarthritis and sleep apnoea in obese patients, all returning results in favour of a low calorie diet.
