Pharmacists gender pay gap ‘high’

Analysis of latest stats reveals female pharmacists are falling behind their male counterparts in earnings

According to combined statistics from the ATO and the ABS, male pharmacists earn an average annual salary of $85,362, while the average income for female pharmacists is $63,503.

This is despite pharmacy being a female-dominated industry, with 7,100 males and 13,680 females recorded as employed in the field.

The raw pay gap sits at 34.4%, although when adjusted by hours worked, the gap narrows to 13.6%.

“As an occupation the pharmacy profession has a modestly higher gender wage gap than most other jobs,” says Ben Phillips, a principal research fellow at the Australian National University’s Centre for Social Research and Methods.

“Unlike some other professions with relatively large gender wage gaps the pharmacy profession is more female dominated than most.

“It would likely be the case that career progression into owning a pharmacy is stalled by the reality for many women of taking on a greater caring role for their children through their prime working years,” he says.

Phillips found that occupations with significantly larger gender pay gaps than typical were in the financial, medical and legal professions.

Meanwhile, women earned more than men when working as bookkeepers, library assistants, kitchenhands, receptionists, dental assistants and housekeepers – occupations which earn an average of $30,000 taxable income annually.

Across all those reporting income to the ATO, the average taxable income – after deductions – for men is $75,500 and $48,900 for women.

The lower average income for women is partly due to increased numbers working part time across all professions.

    They trot out these statistics as though there is an anti-women bias in the payment of wages. There isn’t. It isn’t until you get half way through the article, that it admits the wage difference is mainly due to women not taking on the sixty-plus-hour-a-week pharmacist manager positions. Where if you account for the non-paid overtime, the hourly rate is lousy. Why are people still making out women are hard done by? Whingeing seems to have become an industry. By the way, thanks to all the men out there who do most of the mega-hour jobs that run the country, so women can spend more time with their children.
