Union welcomes PSA report on remuneration

Professional Pharmacists Australia (PPA) has welcomed the PSA’s recently released report ‘Pharmacists in 2023: Roles and Remuneration’, saying pay and work conditions are now improving over time.

“As the union for employee pharmacists, PPA has worked to build the power and influence of employee pharmacists to begin to raise remuneration from the dire decline over the past decade,” says the organisation.

Pharmacist members have been fighting to raise pay through the work value cases and enterprise bargaining agreements, it says.

The gradual decline in community pharmacist rates of pay is finally reversing, with average growth of between 0.4% and 2.5% depending on a pharmacist’s classification, PPA established in its ‘Community Pharmacists Employment & Remuneration Report 2018’.

Meanwhile three years of community campaigning, pharmacist evidence at the Fair Work Commission and legal arguments have seen the Pharmacy Industry Award increased by 22%.

PSA’s report set out minimum salaries that the industry should be aiming to achieve by 2023.

It suggests bands of pharmacist pay based on level of experience and qualifications – from $80,000-$100,000 for general pharmacist registration, up to $140,000 and above for pharmacists with more than five years’ experience in a defined area of advanced practice.

“The average hourly pay rate for community pharmacists is well below that of professions with comparative levels of professional responsibility and training,” reads the report.

“There are positive signs however that remuneration is improving. A recent decision of the Fair Work Commission recognised a substantive increase in the work value of community pharmacists has occurred since 1998 when work value was last reviewed,” said the PSA.

“These decisions specifically recognised, among other factors, an increased complexity, accountability and responsibility of community pharmacists’ role over the past two decades.”

PPA President Geoff March said: “We welcome the contribution of the PSA to refining roles and future remuneration levels.

“We have discussed possible industry classification structures with the PSA and will continue to work collaboratively on pay and career progression.”
