Will the Health Minister follow through?

New Health Minister Greg Hunt’s speech at APP was warmly welcomed… but will he follow through with his suggested intentions?

Speaking off the cuff and having confirmed some of the figures he quoted almost moments before, Mr Hunt quickly engaged the audience, talking about his grandmother, who had been one of the first women in Victoria to take up pharmacy when it was becoming established as a discipline in the 1930s.

Pharmacy Guild national president George Tambassis welcomed the Minister’s speech, saying he honestly believed it was the best Minister’s speech he had ever heard at an APP conference.

Mr Hunt “sees solutions whereas other people have in the past been a little bit negative”, he said.

But other commentators saw the speech as containing style, but little substance.

“It’s one thing to say it [that he would find a solution shortly on risk share] and there’s another thing to do it,” former national president Kos Sclavos told the AJP.

“It’s literally 30 days. We don’t have until May when the budget is announced, in 30 days the expenditure committee will decide whether to give us the money.”
