Adjunct Associate Professor Debra Rowett has been presented with the SHPA’s prestigious Fred J Boyd Award.
“Adjunct Associate Professor Debra Rowett has been a powerful leader in Australian Pharmacy for over 30 years,” said SHPA president Professor Michael Dooley.
“She is a hospital pharmacist who has interacted with an extremely wide range of health practitioners and services, across a wide range of domains, and has continuously shown leadership, including research excellence.
“Professor Rowett is currently Director, Drug and Therapeutics Information Service, Repatriation General Hospital, Adelaide, South Australia, and President of the Australian Pharmacy Council.
“She has previously held the position of Chair of the Australian Pharmacy Council’s Accreditation Committee which is responsible for reviewing and maintaining standards for all of Australia’s Pharmacy Schools,” Prof Dooley said.
“Throughout her career, Professor Rowett has been a powerful champion for improving the Pharmacy Profession through both the development and improvement of practice standards and through improvements in the standards of education.
“Professor Rowett has had significant involvement across the entire health system and has been appointed to a large number of local, national and international committees.”
Some of her appointments include:
- Chair of the Professional Practice Committee of the Pharmacy Board of South Australia for nine years (and a member for 13 years)
- A member of the PBAC Drug Utilisation Committee
- Chair of the NPS National Prescribing Intervention Expert Advisory Group
- Chair of the NPS Prescribing Evaluation and Research Advisory Group
- Member of the National Lead Clinician Promoting Best Practice Working Group
In 1985, Prof Rowett was a member of the inaugural SHPA Committee of Specialty Practice in Clinical Pharmacy which developed the first Standards of Practice in Clinical Pharmacy. This led to the publication in 1987 of the SHPA policy guidelines for the standard of practice of selected clinical pharmacy activities.
In 2010 Prof Rowett served on the SHPA’s advisory group for the clinical competency tool for general level pharmacists. In 2012, she was a member of the Pharmacy Standards Advisory Group for the new accreditation standards for Pharmacy Education under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme auspiced by the Pharmacy Board of Australia.
“Professor Rowett has been an active researcher for many years. She has almost 100 publications in peer reviewed journals and has been a contributing author to a number of national and international publications,” says Prof Dooley.
“Professor Rowett excels in all the selection criteria for the Fred J Boyd Award and has made ongoing, outstanding contributions to pharmacy and hospital practice.
“As the winner of this prestigious award she will deliver an oration at SHPA’s Medicines Management conference.”
