Changes to Metformin product availability, TGA advises

The TGA is advising that four Metformin products have been restored to a status of ‘available’ after previous supply issues.

The four products are:

  • DIABEX XR 500 metformin hydrochloride 500 mg extended release tablet blister pack
  • DIAFORMIN XR metformin hydrochloride 500 mg extended release tablet blister pack
  • DIABEX XR 1000 metformin hydrochloride 1000 mg extended release tablet blister pack
  • DIAFORMIN XR 1000 metformin hydrochloride 1000 mg extended release tablet blister pack.

These products are now at the status of available, after previously being listed as ‘limited availability’.

The ‘Affected products’ table below has been updated to reflect the current status of the shortages.

Additionally, the information below has been updated to advise pharmacists that, if they are unable to obtain metformin extended release products that are currently available through their regular wholesaler, they should contact an alternative wholesaler to try to secure stock.

Neither Symbion Shop or API showing any stock availability. Why do you keep on writing this when the products are not at the wholesalers? We can’t access the product unless the wholesalers have it.

Whilst this whole debacle has been a real headache for all stakeholders, what has been pharmacist’s experience of how patients switched from MR to standard metformin have gone. Apart from the potential inconvenience of switching OD > BD, have patients been complaining of more GI AEs with the standard tablets ?

“contact an alternative wholesaler” yeah right – written by someone with multiple viable wholesaler accounts – yes/no?
    more likely NFI
