Pharmacist granted bail ahead of appeal

A Sydney pharmacist jailed for illegally supplying HPV vaccines has been bailed while awaiting appeal

Mosman pharmacist Katherine Gong pleaded guilty to three counts of prohibition on wholesale supply of certain substances in November, for supplying more than 2,400 Gardasil 9 vaccines to an associate who then exported the substance under a false declaration to Hong Kong.

Magistrate Jennifer Atkinson sentenced her on November 28 to eight months’ prison with six months non-parole.

On Wednesday, District Court judge Helen Syme released Ms Gong from custody from Silverwater Women’s Correctional Centre after the pharmacist’s parents offered up a $20,000 surety, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

Under bail conditions she must also surrender her passport.

Judge Syme ordered a sentencing assessment report to indicate Ms Gong’s suitability for community service, reports Angus Thompson from Fairfax.

Ms Gong is set to appeal her sentence in the District Court on January 23.
