Pharmacists: new registration standards

happy pharmacist

A new set of registration standards for pharmacists has been published but do not apply to the current cycle of renewals.

However the rules now have an impact on:

  • professional indemnity insurance (PII) arrangements,
  • recency of practice, and
  • continuing professional development (CPD).

The new rules were approved by the Australian Health Workforce Ministerial Council on 27 August 2015. The new rules  apply to pharmacists and many other healthcare professions, but the standards only apply for renewal and for initial registration; current applicants are not affected.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice, Chinese medicine, and Occupational Therapy Boards are also in the early stages of reviewing its arrangements, recency of practice and CPD registration standards. Additionally, the Optometry Board iseviewing its CPD registration standard, likewise  the Psychology Board is reviewing its registration standard.
