Malcolm Turnbull has reappointed an old face to his new ministry despite a difficult campaign against Labor

Sussan Ley has retained the federal health portfolio, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced.

There has also been a new appointment for Assistant Minister for Rural Health.

David Gillespie, a former physician and gastroenterologist with experience in private and public health, will now be assisting Fiona Nash who will remain as Minister for Rural Health.

Gillespie is the National Party Member for Lyne, in regional NSW.

Ken Wyatt is staying on as Assistant Minister for Health, heading up the portfolio alongside Ley.

AJP readers predicted the result correctly in the recent poll, ‘Who will be Health Minister?’, with 35% saying that Ley would be retained.

Close second Tony Abbott (27%) did not find a place in the cabinet.

Meanwhile Australian health organisations are already getting in touch with Ley about next steps in the health sector.

There had been much speculation about whether Ley would retain the portfolio amid claims she had been “gagged” during, and after the election campaign.

Pharmacy should run a candidate against Ms Ley in her parliamentary seat to get rid of her. (It used to be held by the National Party, and could be again.) She is an enemy of pharmacy, as is her whole government.

Why are the pharmacy bodies tripping over themselves to congratulate and brown-nose Sussan Ley? This is the minister that introduced the $1.00 co-payment discount. Wake up PSA! Wake up Guild! For God’s sake somebody stand up for the profession.
