The Guild Pharmacy Academy is collaborating with Pfizer Consumer Healthcare in the development of a new QCPP Refresher Training online course for pharmacy assistants on heartburn.
The online course has been approved for 30 minutes of QCPP Refresher Training and provides pharmacy assistants with information on the nature of heartburn and common treatments, the key advice that should be provided to patients, medicines that are now available for pharmacy assistants to provide to patients.
The training reinforces the use of the Ask-Assess-Advise questions and provides guidance to pharmacy assistants on when to refer to the pharmacist.
Sue Bond, Head – Guild Pharmacy Academy, says she sees the new online course on heartburn as an opportunity for pharmacy assistants to update their knowledge.
“When a scheduling change occurs there is an opportunity for pharmacy assistants to update their knowledge and ensure that they are able to provide their patients with the most effective medicines to treat their health condition,” she says.
Bond believes that this online course achieves two outcomes.
“Pharmacy assistants can learn about a medicine that they can now provide to patients to assist them with heartburn as well as adding to their annual three hours of QCPP Refresher Training requirement,” she says.
The new course, Pharmacy Health Solutions – Heart burn is available on the myLearning site.
Heartburn is a common condition that compels many patients to seek assistance from their community pharmacy, according to the Academy.
Pharmacy assistants can make a difference by providing patients with information, advice and medicines to assist them with this common condition; but it is important for pharmacy assistants to understand the condition, the medicines used to treat heartburn and the times when referral to the pharmacist is appropriate.
