Step towards medicinal cannabis reform: Di Natale

The Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee unanimously recommended today that the Regulator of Medicinal Cannabis Bill be passed into law.

The bill was introduced by Greens Leader Dr Richard Di Natale and co-sponsored by Senator Ian McDonald, Senator Anne Urquhart and Senator David Leyonhjelm.

“The committee’s unanimous endorsement of the bill is a significant step towards achieving medicinal cannabis reform,” says Senator Di Natale.

“The next step is to secure sufficient time in the parliament to bring this bill to a vote so today I call on Tony Abbott to allow this bill to be debated during government business. Given that the bill has co-sponsors from all sides of politics I hope that we can work together to make this happen.

“The community wants this reform, the evidence supports it and a Senate committee has unanimously endorsed it. Now all we need is the will to get it done.

“This issue is not about politics, it’s about getting medicine to people who need it. We have an opportunity to relieve the pain and suffering of many Australians if we can just come together and show parliament at its best.

“The committee has recommended some amendments to strengthen the bill that the co-sponsors will now consider, but this should not be used as an excuse for major delays.”
