Latest data reveals the state of the pharmacy profession

The current size and shape of the profession have been revealed in the latest round of statistical data from the Pharmacy Board of Australia.

The statistics, currently on the Board website, show that in March 2016 there were 29,634 registered pharmacists in Australia.

According to registration type, these consist of:

  • 26,743 – general registration
  • 1,856 – provisional registration
  • 11 – limited registration, and
  • 1,024 – non-practising registration.

Of the total number, 61.35% were female and 38.65% male. The percentage of female pharmacists has increased from 57% in March 2012.

The majority of registered pharmacists (around 16,000) are aged between 25 and 39 years.

Another 2,572 are aged under 25 years, while 104 are aged 80+ years.

In March 2015 there were 28,950 registered pharmacists, and in March 2012 there were 26,434.

    We need gender parity in Pharmacy! 61% are female!! (Likewise with speech pathology, where surely close to 100% must be female.)
