The week in review

Doctor complaints about pharmacists practising to the top of their scope featured strongly this week…

Government talks about the 7CPA with the Guild and PSA have begun, while Chemist Warehouse, Ramsay Health and doctor’s groups have been invited to a roundtable meeting this month on the subject.

Pharmacy hit the mainstream media again, with a young dad and marketing professional claiming he was injured when a pharmacist gave him his flu injection in his back… a claim the pharmacist strenuously denies, and the Guild is backing the pharmacist.

The Pharmacy Guild has hit back at doctors complaining about moves to allow pharmacists to practise at top of scope, with interim executive director Pam Price saying they’re “stuck in the past”. Doctors were complaining that pharmacists were seeking to put profits above patients, while the RACGP‘s Dr Bruce Willett said that the Queensland pharmacy trial was enabling antimicrobial resistance… a stance slammed by the Guild’s Trent Twomey, who called it “fear-mongering, pure and simple”.

A new petition campaign is underway, asking Australians to sign to have legislation around pharmacy changed to make it easier for discounters to enter small towns—on a site which lists Chemist Warehouse as an owner.

AHPRA was featured on the ABC‘s 7.30 report, with “whistleblowers” reporting concern that the organisation was not looking into complaints in an appropriate fashion… but AHPRA says it responds to all notifications as quickly as possible.

Arrow and Apotex merged to form Arrotex. We looked at whether some vitamins and supplements are doing more harm than good. And we discovered that some health workers, including pharmacy staff, are spreading messages discouraging vaccination.

AJP would love to hear from you about the people you think are having the biggest influence on pharmacy in Australia—for good or for ill! Tell us who you think is holding sway over the industry in our latest campaign, here. And while we’re asking you questions, who do you think should have a seat at the 7CPA negotiation table? Tell us in our poll here!
