The week in review

Canberra Parliament House

All eyes were on Canberra this week as the Federal Budget was handed down, with a boost to health

This week saw economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic prioritised in the Federal Budget, with a focus on small and medium businesses; Health Minister Greg Hunt said the government is “delivering a record $115.5 billion in 2020–21 and $467 billion over the forward estimates to deliver the essential health services Australians need under the Long Term National Health Plan“.

The Pharmacy Guild’s Suzanne Greenwood wrote that, “Small business community pharmacies will also benefit from the significant expansion of the Instant Asset Write Off, to allow the full value of any eligible asset purchased by virtually any business to be written off immediately”. The PSA‘s Michelle Lynch welcomed the medicines listing guarantee and SHPA‘s Kristin Michaels the investment in antimicrobial stewardship.

Meanwhile the Pharmacy Guild elections are gathering pace, with every district in NSW being contested.

And congratulations to Vaughn Eaton, who was awarded the 2020 Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia Medal of Merit for his “selfless sharing of expert pharmacy knowledge” over 30 years.
