The state of the pharmacy workforce in 10 key numbers
As of 30 September 2017 there are:
- 30,458 registered pharmacists
- 61.9% of registered pharmacists are female (18,850)
- There are 1110 non-practising pharmacists
- 30.5% of pharmacists (9295) have NSW as their primary place of practice
- 0.74% of pharmacists (226) have Northern Territory as their primary place of practice
- 135 registered pharmacists are aged 80 years and over (79 of these hold general registration, while 56 are non practising)
- 16,772 pharmacists are aged between 25 and 39 years
- 1,955 are aged under 25 years. Of these, 897 hold provisional registration
- There are slightly more pharmacists aged 55-59 than there are aged 50-54 (1795 compared to 1793)
- Aside from the slight blip above, there is an incremental decrease in numbers in each age bracket from the peak pharmacist population – the 30-34 years age group (with 6185 registered members)
