Dig deep for distressed colleagues

Tuesday, 27 November is GivingTuesday, and the Pharmacists’ Support Service is using the day to launch its Christmas appeal

Giving Tuesday, which is often hashtagged as #GivingTuesday, is an American phenomenon and refers to the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Its intent is to encourage gifts to charities around the world.

“PSS is a charity supporting pharmacists, interns and pharmacy students all around Australia through our telephone support line,” says John Coppock, president of PSS, in announcing the launch.

“The number of calls to the service continues to increase and we ask all members of the profession to support this work with the gift of a donation during the giving season.

“You never know when you or a colleague might need PSS.”

PSS relies on the generosity of the pharmacy profession to undertake its work.

“Work pressures for pharmacists at this time of the year in the lead up to the holiday season can be substantial,” Mr Coppock says.

“It is a busy time of the year for everyone and this pressure cooker environment creates a level of stress for us and those we serve in our role as pharmacists. We must look after ourselves in order to be able to care for our patients.

“PSS is a profession specific charity and we need your support. The volunteers, who are trained for their role to take calls from distressed pharmacists, interns and students are themselves all experienced pharmacists or retired pharmacists who understand the nature of the profession and the pressures pharmacists experience.

“We are aware that there are times in every pharmacists’ life when they need to talk to a colleague about a distressing matter.”

If pharmacists’ usual support systems are not available and they need to talk, the Pharmacists’ Support Service (PSS) is available throughout the holiday season from 8am to 11pm EST every day of the year.

Pharmacists can call 1300 244 910 for anonymous and confidential support from a pharmacist colleague over the phone.
