A pharmacy in northern NSW has decided to “pay it forward” to customers by giving them gifts
Customers at the Palms Pharmacy at Palms Central, Coffs Harbour may have been surprised to find pharmacists and pharmacy assisting giving them goodies today, as part of the pharmacy’s “Random acts of kindness” day.
The pharmacy is handing out packs of hair colour, skincare, supplements, snacks and more – as well as hosting a morning tea with bakery items from nearby bakery K’Pane.
The pharmacy’s naturopath and organiser of the event, Michelle Magee, told the AJP that she and colleagues decided to give back to their community after she became interested in last week’s RU OK? Day.
“The biggest area I treat people for is stress-related conditions,” she says. “A lot of health issues are driven by stress, and so I’ve got a real heart for people with depression and anxiety.”
She has also seen family members affected by depression and anxiety, she says.
“We approached reps to get products to give away, and a local bakery here in the [Palms Central shopping] centre to provide morning tea.
“I’ve made myself available today to discuss diet and lifestyle things that people can look at in terms of supporting mood, and the pharmacists are here to discuss medication.”
She says people have been “a bit shocked” to be given gifts by the pharmacy, but that the day has also been well received and it’s likely the initiative will be repeated at some stage.
“Some are shocked that we would do that – no strings attached! But we don’t want anything from them. We just want to share a bit of love and kindness, and hopefully somewhere along the line, they can spread a bit of cheer to someone else.
“It’s about that sense of connection with people. We wanted to remind them that they’re not alone.”
