Research released today shows a “worrying ” number of Australians have self prescribed gluten free diet, believing diets containing wheat are unhealthy.
Findings from Amcal show more than a tenth of Australians have adopted a gluten free lifestyle.
This is almost 10 times the number with diagnosed coeliac disease.
More findings show that a large number are self diagnosing as gluten intolerant with no testing, and 27% had “no idea” what coeliac disease is.
Amcal and spokesperson Dr Cindy Pan encourage people who are concerned about the possibility of gluten intolerance to consult a health professional or take the coeliac screening test available through Amcal, Amcal Max and Guardian pharmacies.
