Chemist Warehouse has extended its reach, scoring the opportunity to place branded seat cushions filled with products at both the MCG and ANZ Stadium this weekend

Chemist Warehouse has announced that it is gearing up to create two of the biggest pharmacy activations in history on both AFL Grand Final Day and NRL Grand Final Day.

The banner group will place 100,000 seat cushions filled with products at the MCG ahead of the 2018 Toyota AFL Grand Final on Saturday 29 September.

It will also place 83,500 seat cushions at ANZ Stadium ahead of the NRL Telstra Grand Final 2018 on Sunday 30 September.

In addition, one Chemist Warehouse customer at each event will be given the opportunity to kick for their chance to win one million dollars.

Chemist Warehouse Chief Operating Officer Mario Tascone said he is thrilled to be supporting both the AFL and the NRL for their grand finals.

“At Chemist Warehouse we take pride in supporting Australian sports at every level and we are thrilled to be providing everyone in attendance with wellness solutions to get them through the big day,” he said.

The marketing event is an extension of last year, when Chemist Warehouse partnered with the AFL to place 100,000 cushions at the MCG and 10,000 at Rod Laver Arena for the AFL Grand Final Footy Show.

However the move drew criticism from a public health advocate, who argued that the promotion was inappropriate because the cushions contained Swisse Magnesium tablets and vouchers for other complementary medicines.

Associate Professor Ken Harvey from Monash University lodged a complaint with the TGA, AHPRA and ACCC regarding the promotion, claiming it was “irresponsible” because supplements were distributed at public venues accessed by children of all ages, and because there was no information provided on the recommended upper limit of magnesium intake (as a supplement) for young children.

He called on the TGA, AHPRA and ACCC to impose a penalty of $2.3 million.

However no significant outcome came of the complaint.

AFL General Manager Commercial Kylie Rogers said she is pleased that Chemist Warehouse is continuing to provide for fans on the biggest day of September.

“Chemist Warehouse’s seat cushion giveaway on all seats of the MCG last year’s Grand Final was a massive hit with fans, and I’m excited fans will again have products on hand to help them get through the exciting day,” Ms Rogers said.

NRL Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Abdo said: “Chemist Warehouse are a valued partner of the game and are providing our fans with an innovative and unique game day experience.”
